Bulgarian Koi Angelfish
The blushing Bulgarian angelfish, or koi Bulgarian angelfish, is another positive offspring of the Cold War. When the Iron Curtain fell over Eastern Europe in the Cold War, aquarium hobbyists in communist countries were left to their own devises and became adept breeders. Many natural genes of wild fish were isolated. Today beautiful variations from that (hopefully) bygone era are found in the hobby today. The Bulgarian gene promotes inky black fins on a cream or koi body. Koi Bulgarians have orange and cream bodies with the Bulgarian dark fins. The sometimes open operculum in juvenile angels closes as the fish ages, as is the case with koi angelfish in particular.
